Mutual Cause Partner - Oceana

The Mutual worked hard to identify the blend of cause areas that will have the greatest impact on our environment. We then scoured thousands of nonprofits to find the organizations that are the best at what they do.

About Oceana

Oceana is the largest international organization working solely to protect the world’s oceans.

Oceana wins policy victories for the oceans using science-based campaigns. Since 2001, we have protected over 1.2 million square miles of ocean and innumerable sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other sea creatures. More than 500,000 supporters have already joined Oceana.

Global in scope, Oceana has offices in North, South and Central America and Europe. According to a study published in Science, less than 4 percent of the oceans remain unaffected by human activity.

The good news is that we can restore our oceans to their former glory. In many cases, laws governing fishing and pollution already exist – we simply need to enforce them and ensure that management and industry obey a few commonsense principles.

Areas of Focus
  • Preserve Special Places
Oceana protects some of the world’s most beautiful and threatened marine places, from the Arctic to Patagonia.
  • Stop Ocean Pollution
The oceans have become a dumping ground. From Mercury emitted by industrial plants to concentrated fish waste from offshore fish farming to oil spills, Oceana is working to stop all of these pollution sources.
  • Climate and Energy
The oceans absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide in a system that keeps our planet’s atmosphere in balance and now, with over saturation of CO2, it is causing them to become more acidic and jeopardizing the future of coral reefs and organisms that produ
  • Protect Marine Wildlife
Many marine animals are at risk from overfishing, climate change and harmful fishing methods. Sea Turtles, Sharks, Tuna and Salmon are just a few examples of at risk marine animals.
  • Promote Responsible Fishing
Destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling waste more than 16 billion pounds of fish and kill countless marine mammals every year, while obliterating ocean habitat like coral reefs and seamounts.
