The Mutual worked hard to identify the blend of cause areas that will have the greatest impact on our environment. We then scoured thousands of nonprofits to find the organizations that are the best at what they do.

Recent Successes
  • Seminars and scholarships for educators from around the world
    We launched an annual Schooling for Sustainability Leadership Academy and offer at least two intensive seminars a year. We provide scholarship support to public school teachers in underserved communities.
  • Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Feasibility Study
    We completed a comprehensive feasibility study with OUSD that applies our Rethinking School Lunch framework to the reform of a large urban school district food program linked to regional agriculture and ecoliteracy.
  • Companion guides to award-winning social action films
    We created discussion and curriculum guides to the Academy Award-nominated Food, Inc.; Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s The Last Mountain; Tiffany Shlain’s Connected; and WorldLink’s Nourish: Food + Community.
  • Rethinking California School Lunch
    In partnership with TomKat Charitable Trust, we implemented the Rethinking California School Lunch campaign, including the Cooking with California Food in K–12 Schools cookbook and professional development guide, and a Cooking with California Food confe
